Hey Missy!
April 17, 2008 at 5:52 am | In Uncategorized | 6 CommentsI’m sure most of us have at least one nickname… I have a lot of them, but for most of my life my nickname WAS my name.
From birth, my parents always called me Missy. I didn’t actually use the name Melissa until I graduated from college. When I got into this business I thought Melissa was more professional, so I started going by that instead of Missy.
My family still calls me Missy, as do many of my friends. I identify with both and respond to both. So the other day when my coworker, Libby (probably a nickname), came into the newsroom and yelled “Hey Missy!”, I hollered back “What?”. She looked at me very confused. Turns out she was actually calling for Meredith Land, who she had nicknamed “Missy”.
What’s your nickname? Leave a comment letting me know what it is, and how you got it.
Have a great day!

My folks and extended family have called me Bobby since before I can remember. I started using Rob and Robert in high school, but they never changed. It was pretty embarassing to have them call me that when I had friends around in high school, but what can you do?
Now, despite bieng well along in years, any time I call on of them and announce myself, I say “It’s Bobby” because it just feels too wierd to say “It’s Rob”. My wife gets a pretty big kick out of it and she never fails to point it out when we have large get togethers with extended family. I image my kids will get a good laugh when they get old enough to figure out I have a “kid’s name”

My family call me Jennifer, but my first name is something else (not related to a Jennifer-ism). Growing up and then going to college and professionally now , I went / go by my first name. So now when I am with my family and they call me Jennifer — someone who knows me by my first name gets confused as to why I have 2 totally different names & why.
To ease the confusion, I just tell them to call me either one or whatever they want.

My family either called me Keith or Horsefly. My grandfather named me horsefly about 35 years ago because I would pester him like a horsefly and no matter how many times he swatted me away, I still pestered him.
Later in life, everyone started calling me Pain.

…and I only named Meredith “Missy” because I was too sleepy to remember who I was collecting for the cut-in…I knew it was the female anchor, as opposed to Brendan, whom I have nicknamed “Daddy”…go figure…

Interestingly, my nickname has always been Melissa Newton; it’s weird, because that is nowhere near my actual name, but exactly the same as your name. Interesting!
